چکیده

EGS is a very common Monte Carlo code, used in the simulation of Nuclear Medicine devices. Simulation techniques are particularly useful, in order to optimize collimator configuration and camera design in Single Photon Emission studies. Using the EGS code, users must define the geometry where particles are transported. This can be both a very hard task and a source of inefficiency, especially in case of complex geometries as, for instance, hexagonal hole collimators or pixellated detectors. In this paper we present a modular description for such geometries. Regions are seen as a basic cell repeated in the space. Our method allows the computation of the region to which a point belongs to in a few steps; thus we are able to calculate this region in a reduced number of operations, independently from the collimator and detector dimensions. We validated the modular description, by performing the characterization of two different collimators: one with square holes and one with hexagonal holes. With modular description we can reduce the computational time up to 25%, with respect to a “traditional” geometric description. It is also possible to simulate a breast phantom for different configurations: each run (one phantom relative to a 10 min acquisition with full photons and electrons transport) would take almost 24 hours on a cluster of four PI11 800 MHz processors. A bootstrap approach for analyzing the statistical properties of spect and pet images - Nuclear Science Symposium Conference Record, 2001 IEEE

We describe a non-parametric bootstrap method to estimate the statistical properties of Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) images, whatever the type of noise in the projections and the reconstruction algorithm. Using analytical simulations and real PET data, this method is shown to accurately predict the statistical distribution, hence the ...

OPTIMIZING LIGHT COLLECTION FROM THIN SCINTILLATORS USED IN A BETA-RAY CAMERA FOR SURGICAL USE - Nuclear Science Symposium and Medical Imaging Conference Record, 1995., 1995 IEEE

We are developing a 1-2 cm2 area camera for imaging the distribution of beta emitting radiopharmaceuticals at the surface of tissue exposed during surgery. The front end consists of a very thin continuous or segmented scintillator sensitive to betas (positrons or electrons) of a few hundred keV, yet insensitive to gamma rays. The light from the scintillator is piped away through clear fibers in...

Investigation of Collimator Influential Parameter on SPECT Image Quality: a Monte Carlo Study

Background: Obtaining high quality images in Single Photon Emission Tomography (SPECT) device  is the most important goal in nuclear medicine. Because if image quality is low, the possibility of making a mistake in diagnosing and treating the patient will rise. Studying effective factors in spatial resolution of imaging systems is thus deemed to be vital. One of the most important factors in S...

Evaluation of the performance of parallel-hole collimator for high resolution small animal SPECT: A Monte Carlo study

Introduction: Image quality and accuracy of in vivo activity quantification in SPECT are affected by collimator penetration and scatter components, especially in high energy imaging. These phenomena highly depend on the collimator characteristic and photon energy. The presence of penetrated and scattered photons from collimator in SPECT images degrades spatial resolution, contr...
